Program Overview and Highlights
Tracks:
- General Academic Hospital Medicine (1 year)
- Business Administration (2 years) with executive MBA (separate application UCSD Rady School of Management required)
Medical Education
- Opportunity to work with medical students and residents in various learning environments, enhance techniques for feedback delivery, effective bedside rounding, and small and large group teaching
- Training through Stanford Faculty Development Series, Academic Hospitalist Academy, UCSD FACE (Faculty and Fellows as Clinician Educators) UCSD and peer to peer feedback
- Longitudinal asynchronous didactic curriculum on high yield topics
Scholarship and Quality Improvement
- Strengthen skills in clinical research techniques and data analysis through select courses in the UCSD CREST program
- Design and lead quality improvement projects of clinical relevance, with requirement to produce work at local/national conference by the end of fellowship
Business Administration
- Option to apply and if accepted, complete a subsidized executive MBA program via UCSD Rady School of Management (extends duration of fellowship to two years)
- Strengthen skills to launch impactful careers in healthcare leadership, or healthcare adjacent fields
Leadership
- Participate in BEAM (Business and Entrepreneurship Acumen in Medicine) course offered by UCSD and Rady School of Management
- Join operational committees at the department and hospital level for early leadership skills/exposure
- Improve the ability to understand and align priorities of quality and safety initiatives with those of the institution
Mentorship
- Structured quarterly mentorship meetings with faculty advisor to review and ensure effective implementation of individualized learning plans
- Opportunity to be a mentor to medical students and residents
- Monthly meetings with scholarly project mentor, academic mentor, and early career hospitalist mentor
- Networking with key faculty ad hoc to provide additional career guidance
Clinical Work
- 0.5 clinical FTE with approximately 8 weeks as an inpatient ward attending, including trainee supervision (minimum 4 weeks). Small mix of admitting and night shifts (flexible schedule allowed) at UCSD Hillcrest and UCSD Jacobs Medical Center
- Opportunity for elective rotations in palliative care, oncology, transplant and cystic fibrosis
