UC San Diego Division of Hospital Medicine Fellowship

The UC San Diego Division of Hospital Medicine fellowship is a one-year program designed to strengthen knowledge and skills essential for a successful career in academic hospital medicine.

The focus is on developing core skills in quality improvement techniques, scholarship, medical education, and leadership.

The curriculum is delivered through intense mentoring, class course work, hands-on teaching, and participation in quality improvement and scholarly projects. The fellowship also includes direct patient care (teach and non-teach shifts).

This is a non-ACGME fellowship.

How to apply

Applicants must have completed a residency in Internal Medicine by the fellowship start date.

Application process for the Academic year 2023-24 is now closed.

Interested applicants can email the following documents to Brianna Concha: 

  • An updated curriculum vitae
  • A personal statement detailing your interest in our fellowship (1–2 pages maximum). Issues to address include your reasons for pursuing a fellowship, any relevant experiences or skills that strengthen your candidacy, your future career goals in academic hospital medicine and how the fellowship might impact them, and other unique or interesting features that complete the picture of who you are as a person. Feel free to address some or all of these areas, and include anything else that allows us to truly understand how you would fit in at UC San Diego Hospital Medicine.
  • 1 letter of recommendation from either your Program Director or current program head along with 2 other reference contacts

Core Experiences

The fellow's year will be comprised of scheduled and elective opportunities. The fellow will be able to interact with content experts of various areas that can mentor ad hoc as needed. Each fellow will develop an individualized development plan at the beginning of the fellowship.

Medical Educator Skills

  • Prepare and demonstrate effective didactic teaching in various formats (small, medium, and large groups) to various levels of learners
  • Lead and facilitate bedside teaching rounds on the inpatient medical teaching service
  • Describe and demonstrate techniques for providing and receiving effective feedback with learners and peers

Scholarship and Quality Improvement

  • Strengthen skills in clinical research techniques and data analysis through participation in select courses in the UCSD CREST program
  • Design and lead a quality improvement project of clinical relevance to Hospital Medicine
  • Opportunity to develop a POCUS portfolio and receive a certificate of completion under the guidance of certified faculty

Leadership skills

  • Improve the ability to understand and align priorities of quality and safety initiatives with those of the institution
  • Build a business case for at least one quality improvement project
  • Develop early leadership skills through participation in select lectures and committees at the Divisional and Medical Center level
  • Participate in BEAM (Business and Entrepreneurship Acumen in Medicine) thru a collaborative between UCSD and Rady School of Management


  • Fellows will meet weekly with a member of the fellowship director team and additional mentors as applicable to their academic projects. The mentorship team will consist of a project mentor, an academic mentor, and an early career hospitalist mentor.
  • The fellowship director will work with the fellow to create an individualized development plan (below) and aid the fellow in selecting additional training or projects to help achieve individualized goals.
  • The fellowship director will also facilitate networking with key faculty, such as clinician-educator exemplars and scholars who can engage the fellow in their research or provide additional career guidance.

Clinical Work

  • 8 weeks as an inpatient ward attending with a minimum of 4 weeks on a teaching service
  • Direct care service at our La Jolla campus which includes Thornton Pavilion and Jacobs Tower
  • 12 consult shifts and 14-night shifts
  • Fellows will have the opportunity to improve their skills by working on focused care services such as Palliative Care, Oncology, and Cystic Fibrosis.
