📝 Applying to the Fellowship

1. Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants must have completed an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine residency and be eligible for medical licensure in California. The fellowship is best suited for those pursuing careers in academic hospital medicine with a focus on education, quality improvement, research, or leadership.

2. Do you sponsor visas?

On occasion, the fellowship is able to sponsor J-1 visas for qualified international medical graduates. Applicants requiring visa sponsorship are encouraged to apply early and contact the program to discuss eligibility and institutional requirements.

3. When should I apply?

Applications open each summer (July) for the following academic year. Early application is encouraged, as interviews are offered on a rolling basis. The application cycle ends in February.

4. What materials should be submitted with my application? 

  • Current CV
  • Personal statement describing your academic and career goals
  • 1 letter of recommendation from either your Program Director or current program head along with 2 other reference contacts
  • USMLE transcripts and proof of board eligibility or certification

5. How do I submit my application?

💼 Professional Development & Funding Support

1. Are conference or presentation costs covered?

Yes. Fellows receive support for registration, travel, and lodging for at least one professional meeting each academic year (e.g., SHM, ACP, SGIM, or AAMC).
Additional support is available for accepted abstracts, posters, or workshops.

2. Is there funding for scholarly or QI projects?

Project related funding may be available via the Division or University  to assist with data collection, publication fees, or materials. Fellows should discuss anticipated needs with their mentors and the Fellowship Director.

🎓 Executive MBA Track 

1. Can fellows pursue an MBA during fellowship?

Yes. Fellows may apply to the UC San Diego Rady School of Management Executive Program, an ideal complement for those interested in leadership, healthcare innovation, and systems management.

2. Is there financial support for the MBA?

The fellowship offers a tuition subsidy for fellows accepted into the MBA program. The amount may vary annually based on available funds.

3. How do I apply to the Rady MBA program?

The MBA requires a separate application process through the Rady School of Management:

  • When applying to the fellowship, let leadership know of the intention to simultaneously apply to the MBA program.

🕓 Program Details

1. What does the fellowship schedule look like?

Fellows participate in a structured blend of clinical work, academic development, and leadership training. Dedicated time is provided for scholarly projects, coursework, and mentorship activities. 50% time is devoted to clinical work (blend of teach service and direct care), with the other 50% devoted to academic advancement.

2. Are there opportunities for teaching?

Yes. Fellows play an active role in mentoring medical students and residents, as well as leading didactic and bedside teaching as part of the fellowship’s medical education focus.
